Abstract
Objectives£º The aim of this study was to examine demographic and clinical characteristics in patients hospitalized by the order of local authorities.

Methods£º Three years of clinical data from the medical records of 138 patients hospitalized by the order of local authorities were analyzed. Subjects were divided into 2 groups£ºlength of stay less than 3 months(Short-term hospitalization, SH), and more than 3 months(Long-term hospitalization, LH). Demographic and clinical variables were compared between the two groups. We investigated the clinical variables that could predict LH. We also examined the dropout rate and readmission pattern after hospital discharge.

Results£º Ninty nine patients(72%) belonged to SH group, and 39(28%) to LH group. The significant clinical variables that could predict a longer length of stay were medicaid type I, unemployment, and use of two antipsychotics during admission. Dropout rates were high during outpatient follow-up. Slightly more than half of patients (53.3%) did not attend first follow-up outpatient clinic immediately after discharge. At 6 month after discharge, cumulative dropout rates were 86.1%. The most common pattern of readmission was voluntary hospitalization(60%).

Conclusion£º This study suggests that type of medical security and severity of disorder might be associated with a longer length of stay. Given that patients hospitalized by the order of local authorities have a high risk for dropout, strategies for decreasing dropout are needed.
